Non-Resident Transatlantic Fellow

GMF Senior Fellow Bruce Stokes wrote a piece for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung to discuss the societal changes in the United States and the importance of economic and cultural efforts. Topics discussed included the insurrection in Washington, the rapidity of demographic transformation, the adjustments required in response to economic change as well as the need for a national conversation. Stokes noted that “Washington must spend more money, gain the cooperation of business and organized labor, and overcome a societal ethos that places the responsibility for economic adjustment on the individual.” He added that “purely economic initiatives… will not be sufficient to quell the unrest sparked by demographic transformation…It will require an unprecedented national conversation about race, ethnicity, and gender.”
